These were the first torpedoes to be used against an enemy ship, when two Russian torpedo boats, Sinop and Chesma, attacked the Turkish monitor Mahmudie on 28 Dec 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War. These were also the first torpedoes to sink a ship in combat, when the same torpedo boats sank the Turkish armed merchantman Intibah on 14 January 1878. The torpedoes were fired from about 210 feet (65 m).
